Is It Possible To Remain A Muslim Without Saying Prayer? What Shariah Has To Say?

In Muslim societies, these days most of the religious issues are resolved by emotion but religious issues are not emotion dependent but Sharia dependent. What Sacred Quran and Sacred Sunnah does not permit, if that is permitted by society or emotion, can never be accepted (Jaej) according to Islam.

Namaj (Prayer) is, that kind of a subject which is also judged by the people emotionally (Nawjubillah). Let alone socially unknown  people some of our close and known brothers and sisters, family  members have similar feelings. Whereas the issue a 180% anti-Srahriat fith (Aquidah). Without Namaj (Prayer) one can never remain as a Muslim under any circumstance. Beside average Muslim it is found that some Alim/Ulama also do not have a fare idea on the subject. He may be propagating Islam throughout the country but his own family members may not be practicing Muslim. When they die they are buried in Muslim graveyards. Same Alim may conduct Janaja prayer for his non-practicing Muslim relative; arrange special prayer for the departed soul. Whereas the reality is; a non-practicing Muslim dies as non-Muslim. Meaning death of a Hindu or the death of a non-practicing Muslim is same from the point of view of Sharia(Islamic doctrine). Whereas socially we are organizing Kulkhani, Doa-mahfeel and many others out of emotion, practically having no benefit to the departed soul.

Allah Pak has given clear instruction about our prayers to all living believers (individuals and all family members). Modern religious preachers (Alim and Ulama) are indifferent to that. Sacred Al-Qur’an Says (یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا قُوۡۤا اَنۡفُسَکُمۡ وَ اَہۡلِیۡکُمۡ نَارًا وَّ قُوۡدُہَا النَّاسُ وَ الۡحِجَارَۃُ عَلَیۡہَا مَلٰٓئِکَۃٌ غِلَاظٌ شِدَادٌ لَّا یَعۡصُوۡنَ اللّٰہَ مَاۤ اَمَرَہُمۡ وَ یَفۡعَلُوۡنَ مَا یُؤۡمَرُوۡنَ) ‘Save yourselves and your family members from the hell fire, whose fuel will be people and stones, over which are [appointed] angles, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands, but do what they are commanded.’ (Al-Qur’an 66/6)

Let us look at the explanation (Tafseer) of this Ayaath Shareef. This Ayaath Shareef initially says all Muslim to save themselves and their family members from the hell fire, then mentioned the fierceness of hell fire, finally it explains those who will be destined with hell, no power, party persuasion or bribe will be able to save them from the clutch of severe minded angles. Name of these angles are Zabania. This Ayaath Shareef further expresses that only trying to get rid of hell fire does not cover the limit of individual responsibility, he as a leader of the family, also need to provide education to his family members to  grow up as dear to Allah Pak. This is a duty that is must for every Muslim. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihe Wasallam said, “ you all are the shepherd or  man responsible and all of you will be asked about your under commands. Women are responsible for the house of her husband and also for her kids, she has to answer for her deeds. (Bukhari Shareef 893, 5188).

At the beginning of this ayaath shareef, it has indicated to a very important responsibility that is rectifying and purifying self along with all family members and provide Islamic education and discipline to them. So that they are saved from being fuel of hell fire. Whatever Allah Pak has asked you not to do, ask them the same not to do. Whatever Allah Pak has asked you to do ask your family members to do the same. This will help them to remain away from hell fire. (Ibn Qasir). That is why Rasul Pak Sallallahu Alaihe Wasallam said, ask your offspring’s to say regular prayer from the age of seven. When their age will be ten and if they are reluctant to say regular prayer if need bit them and separate their sleeping beds. (Abu Daud Shareef 495, Musnade Ahmad Shareef 2/180). Therefor it is necessary to remind family members about prayer and fasting. When Rasul Pak Sallallahu Alaihe Wasallam used to stand for Bethir Salah he used to call Aysha Siddiqa Alaihis Salam to come and stand for Bethir prayer. (Muslim Shareef 744, Musnade Ahmad 6/152). Besides;  according to Hadees Shareef Rasul Pak Sallallahu Alaihe Wasallam said, “ Allah Pak bestow your Rahmath on that man who stand for salath at night and wakes up his wife to do the same, if she does not listen to, he sprinkles water on her face.  Allah Pak bestow your Rahmath on that woman also who stand for salath at night and wakes up her husband to do the same, if he does not listen to, she sprinkles water on his face.” (Abu Daud Shareef 1450, Ibn Majha 1336).

Let us discuss on the core issue, Allah Pak says: (اَحَسِبَ النَّاسُ اَنۡ یُّتۡرَکُوۡۤا اَنۡ یَّقُوۡلُوۡۤا اٰمَنَّا) If human being thinks that by mere announcing that I believe in Islam is enough? (Al-Qur’an 29/2). No; the issue does not end here, having faith in Allah Pak and Rasul Pak Sallallahu Alaihe Wasallam is not enough, One has to abide by all their orders and instructions in detail. Regarding Salath Allah Pak clearly mentioned ( فَاِنۡ تَابُوۡا وَ اَقَامُوا الصَّلٰوۃَ وَ اٰتَوُا الزَّکٰوۃَ فَاِخۡوَانُکُمۡ فِی الدِّیۡنِ) after that if they (non-Muslims)repents and practice salath and pay Zakath then they become your Deeni brothers. I have described my Ayaath clearly for the knowledgeable people (Al-Qur’an 9/11).

Besides, this Ayaath also justify that to be a brother in Islam or to be a Muslim the bindings are: 1st is Tawba from Quffar and Sherik. Second binding is establishing Namaj and the third one is clearing Jakat. Emaan and Tawbah are hidden issues whose significance are not supposed to be understood by average Muslims. Exposer of these two hidden issues are Salat and Jakat. Abdullah Ibn Abbas Radiallahu Taala Anhu said, These Ayaat forbidden (Haram) blood of all Muslims following Qabah. (Tabari; Fathul Qadir)meaning those who say  regular prayer and pay their Zakat and never found saying or doing anything that contradicts Islam, should be considered as Muslim by all means, by heart they are Muslim or Munafiq is not important here. When few so called Muslim denied to pay Jakat, Hazrat Abu Bakar Siddique Radiallahu Taala Anhu raised his sword and declared Jihad against them. At that point those who were in dilemma on the decision, he gave them the reference of this Ayaat Shareef ( فَاِنۡ تَابُوۡا وَ اَقَامُوا الصَّلٰوۃَ وَ اٰتَوُا الزَّکٰوۃَ فَاِخۡوَانُکُمۡ فِی الدِّیۡنِ) to justify his decision.

Therefor it is clear that those who have left Namaj (Prayer), they are not part of Islam or Muslim, reason being after establishing faith in Tawhid and Resalath, Namaj is the most important pillar of the faith and demand of Allah Pak.  After Namaj the second most important obligation is Zakath. People are called Murtad by Hazrat Abu Bakar Siddique Radiallahu Taala Anhu and he declared Jihad against those who would not pay Zakath up to the calculated limit. At that point Hazrat Umar Faruq Radiallahu Taala Anhu said, how can declare Jihad against those who have not yet abandoned Islam, they have only denied to pay Jakath? Whereas Huzur Pak Sallallahu Alaihe Wassallam ordained that he was only asked to fight with someone till he accept Islam. Someone accepting and openly declaring Qalima, his life and property is safe from my side. However, violating Islamic code is a punishable offence. If someone hide Qufri and sins in his heart, that account will be looked after by Allah Pak himself. (Bukhari Shareef 1399). Bleeding Muslim by other Muslim is haram and killing a Muslim by some other Muslim is Qufri. (Bukhari Shareef,6044). At that time Hazrat Abu Bakar Siddique Radiallahu Taala Anhu said, “ Swear upon Allah,I shall definitely fight against those who will differentiate between Jakath and Namaj (prayer), because Jakath is the obligation upon asset. If they deny to give a small goat that they used to give during the time of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alihe Wassallam, then I shall definitely fight against them for not paying Jakath as prescribed. At that point Hazrat Umar Faruq Radiallahu Taala Anhu said, “ Swear upon Allah, He has bestowed Hazrat Abu Bakar Siddique Radiallahu Taala Anhu with so much in depth understanding of Deen that he has rightly understood the gravity of issue and took absolute correct decision.(Bukhari Shareef,1400). The reason for his stubborn decision was the Sacred Quran Shareef, 9/11 ( فَاِنۡ تَابُوۡا وَ اَقَامُوا الصَّلٰوۃَ وَ اٰتَوُا الزَّکٰوۃَ فَاِخۡوَانُکُمۡ فِی الدِّیۡنِ), Once a non-Muslim seek forgiveness (Tawbah) starts saying prayer and clear his Jakath he become a Deeni brother of Islam. (Sacred Al-Quran 9/11).

The issue is very clear, in Islam position of Jakath is after Namaj, for not paying Jakath if someone becomes Murtad and Jihad becomes must (Faraj) against him, in that case the one who leaves Salath, he becomes Murtad without any doubt. As according to Rasullullah Sallallahu Alihe Wassallam the difference between a Qafir and a Mualim is Salath, meaning anyone leaving Salath he has definitely done Shrik.(Abu Daud Shareef- 1080). It has been further told that the difference between a Mumin person and Quafir is abandoning Salath. (Mishkath-579, Muslim Shareef-82, Aby Daud Shareef-468, Tirmizi Shareef 2620, Ibn Majah Shareef- 1078). It is now absolutely clear that whoever abandon Salath he joins Qufur by doing Shirik and those who will die in a state of Qufur will be eventually treated as Mushrik (idol worshiper). There is no ‘if’ or ‘but’ here.

Sacred Quran Shareef says, (30/31) concentrate towards Allah Pak and only fear Him, establish your Salath and don’t be a part of Mushrik. According to Deen Islam Mushrik is a state (door), besides people think that Shrik and Qufar is the worst state (door), this is a wrong understanding, the worst state is Nefaki, this state of Nefaki is more dangerous than Shrik and Qufur. In the hell worst possible punishment will be for the Munafiqs. Out of seven hells the worst hell is the Jahannam, where derailed Muslims, non-Muslims will also not be sent, that remains allotted only for the Munafiqs. Those who forsake prayer and gradually turned into Munafiqs, technically they fall in that category. Allah Pak says in Sacred Quran Shareef(4/142) It is the Salath of Munafiq, It is the Salath of Munafiq, It is the Salath of Munafiq, he keeps on waiting for the sun, when the sun is about to set, at that point of time he hurriedly prostrate four times to fulfill his obligation of Salath, indeed he remembers Allah Pak very less in that kind of Salath. (Muattah Malik 15/48, Abu Daud Shareef-313, Mishkath Shareef-593, Tirmiji Shareef-160. Nasai Shareef-511, Muslim Shareef-622). The point to ponder here is, if this is the condition for saying prayer negligently, what will be the consequence of those who forsake Salath but claim themselves as a Muslim. Having all those Ayaath Shareefs of Sacred Quran Shareef  and  many instructions in Hadees Shareef, Rasullullah Sallallahu Alihe Wassallam said, for Munafiqs, there is no Salath more difficult than Fajar and Esha, if they would know the benefits of those two Salaths they would have crawled all the way for those.(Bukhari Shareef-657, Muslim Shareef-651, Riadus Swalehin-1073, Bulug Al Maram-2/306).

For Munafiq it is very much difficult to participate Fajar and Esha prayer that is why they don’t want to some others participate only to let people know that they are regular Mosque visitor and serious in prayer ( Nawjubillah). Now what about those Muslims, who does not say prayer at all? Muslim Shareef-622 says, this is Munafiks’ Salath, who pray hurriedly to show that they are Muslim and not to be treated as non-Muslim. According to Hadees Shareef (Mishkat Shareef-579, Muslim Shareef-82, Abu Daud Shareef-4678, Nasai Shareef-486,Tirmizi Shareef-2620, Ibn Majah Shareef-1078)those who don’t say prayer are termed as Mushriq by Rasullullah Sallallahu Alihe Wassallam and Sahaba Ikram Radiallahu Taala Anhu. At that time even Munafiqs didn’t dare not to go to the mosque five time a day. Those who don’t say prayer they are known as Qafir which Munafiq didn’t want to be known as. After producing so many references, if someone claims to be a Muslim but does not say prayer, if they want to die with Imaan, they should immediately apologize for their wrongs and start saying prayer till their last breath. Otherwise, if a Muslim dies abandoning regular prayer, he will die as a Mushriq or Qafir. We seek forgiveness from Almighty Allah not to make us Benamaji (A Muslim who does not say prayer) or a Munafiq.
